My dear Friend & POTUS, JRB,

            I took a hiatus from writing during my Spiritual Retreat in the Land of Enchantment (SR in LoE) where I marveled at Carlsbad Caverns (CC), climbed to the top of Guadalupe Peak & communed with the dunes at White Sands. Have you been to these spots? If not, I encourage you to take a trip. There’s a perfect place in the middle of the “Big Room” in the CC cave with a lectern & benches where you could make a pitch for protecting the Earth. It wouldn’t be too disruptive, because right now the cave is not getting many visitors. You could use some media attention as your mentions are at an all-time low today (NYT=2, WP=2, G=1).

Your rangers are doing a tremendous job interpreting the grandeur of our planet to the public, sharing their enthusiasm for these magical places with the masses. We are so lucky that John Muir & others like him urged our leaders to protect these sites & make them available to all.

CC would be a great place to announce your new Director of the Office of Science & Technology now that Eric Lander had to resign in disgrace. It looks like Jane Lubchenco would be a great replacement for him. I doubt that she would bully her staff. She’s known as the “bionic woman of good science” so, clearly, she is held in high regard. All the little girls in America could identify with her & might be enticed to pursue their interests in STEM.
