My Dear Friend & POTUS, JRB,
Happy MLK Day. My Friends at the AFSC remind us it’s “a day to reflect on what it means to be part of a beloved community. A day to remember the difference we can make together through courageous nonviolent action grounded in love.” Keeping our eyes on that prize rather than the other events of the day will help us get through this challenging moment. I’m going to be marching at the MLK365 to commune with my nighbors. Wish you could join us.
SoW, handing off the WH to 45/47 with dignity & humility will be one of the hardest things you ever do. I know you will hold your head high & model “Superior Man” behavior. Thanks for showing our youth what that looks like.
I understand that while you are at the Capitol Building for the official handoff, the staff at the WH will be furiously working to exchange your stuff for 45/47s. I hope no one gets mixed up. I’m not sure his loyalists are good laborers, so there’s bound to be a SNAFU somewhere. Hopefully, they don’t misplace the new 1st Lady’s outfit as they did back in 1993.
Did you see Katrina vanden Heuvel’s piece about you in the G today where she called you, “a remarkably consequential” POTUS & notes, your “ greatest successes came in domestic policy. Inheriting a post-pandemic economy, (you) orchestrated the best recovery in the industrial world?” I had to agree with her critique of your military budget which starved “resources for real security threats like pandemics & climate change.” She concluded that your foreign policy reflected “nostalgia for a world that structurally cannot exist anymore” which I took to mean that you threw $$ at wars that could have ended much sooner.
That was then, &, as you know, I am all about NOW, NOW, NOW. I realized today how radical it is in America to be that way since we live in a future oriented environment, where folks like to think they are in control of their time & pride themselves on planning ahead, getting things done & being efficient. I am trying to be more polychronic & not worry so much about accounting for every minute. Unfortunately, that means I can get caught up in the moment & miss scheduled events. I’m afraid those in my sphere may misconstrue my time mismanagement as not caring. Any thoughts on how to remedy that?
Are you sure that your preemptive pardons of Dr. Anthony Fauci, retired Gen. Mark Milley & members of the House committee that investigated the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol is the way to go? It sets a dangerous precedence that 45/47 could exploit. According to the AP, “future presidents could use the promise of a blanket pardon to encourage allies to take actions they might otherwise resist for fear of running afoul of the law.”
The good news from Burma is a ceasefire between the junta & the MNDAA. The bad news, reported in the Irrawaddy, is “a junta fighter jet bombed detention centers holding family members of regime troops captured by the Arakan Army (AA), killing 28 women & children on Saturday.” It’s another reminder that WINTA!
If you want to continue receiving a letter every now & then, you will have to send me your mailing address. I can’t promise frequent correspondence as I will be busy writing to 45/47, but I’d be happy to stay in touch.
BYBS,
