Dear Friend,
I will be pressed for time in the next 11 weeks & lots will be happening related to the election, so I am approaching my writing in a new way by googling, “Biden,” clicking on “news” & reading the top 3 stories then googling, “Myanmar” & reading 1 or 2 pieces, & then writing.
When I did that today, Fox News’ piece about the “social media storm” was at the top. It included 7 tweets of folks who were outraged that Jill was given the floor at the cabinet meeting yesterday, including one from Josh Hawley saying, “who is running this country?”
Don’t let the haters get you down!
How’s your meeting with your buddies going?
Sounds like you & Anthony Albanese (AA) had a lovely time together talking about the state of the world. Did the topic of Burma come up? If so, did you make the request I suggested that he take more refugees, especially the Rohingya. Please remind him of the Karen refugees who have revitalized the little town of Nhil in Victoria. That could be a model for rural communities all over Australia & the US. Please start an initiative to make that happen!
I am intrigued with the QUAD’s collaboration for reducing cervical cancer in the Indo-Pacific that Caroline Kennedy initiated. The NYT says, it’s the “fourth most common cause of cancer among women worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. In 2020, the W.H.O. adopted a global strategy for the elimination of the disease. Its goals include having 90 percent of girls vaccinated against HPV by age 15.” I was impressed that “U.S. Navy hospital ships, which already work in the region, will begin conducting cervical cancer screenings & delivering vaccines to remote island nations. India, one of the world’s biggest vaccine manufacturers, will make & distribute vaccines. Japan will provide technological infrastructure.”
That’s excellent!!
Please let me know what the QUAD team decides about improving cooperation on humanitarian response missions, especially in Burma.
BYBS,
