My Dear Friend & POTUS, JRB,

How are you today? Is it a relief to have a respite from commentary about your age & whether it’s time to pass the torch? Are you recalibrating the ways that you talk about 45?

When you spoke to 45, did you get the sense he had the kind of awakening that Doris Kearns Goodwin talked about yesterday? Is he realizing that folks like Steve Bannon & Stephen Miller have been fomenting hateful rhetoric that some misguided youth take literally? Could it be that 45 is getting in touch with his true Divine spark, that he has suppressed for so long?

Stranger things have happened.

Perhaps 45’s new lease on life is only temporary, but I am encouraged to read about his new approach. According to the NYT he has asked his convention planners “to dial it down, not dial it up.” The WP points out that his comments yesterday, “tended to de-escalate rather than inflame .” Even Mike Johnson is talking about turning the temperature down.

I hope we can all stop fear mongering, wringing our hands about what’s going to happen if the other guy wins. We know that life will go on. We know that change will happen. We know there will be suffering & there will be joy. Our challenge is to embrace each moment with curiosity & awe. Life is a mysterious miracle, too precious to waste worrying about what tomorrow will bring. As Matthew says, “do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will take care of itself.”

I hope your trip to Las Vegas goes well. As you get briefed on world affairs, don’t forget to ask about Burma. The United Wa State Army & the Shan State Army-North are getting involved in the fighting around Lashio & it’s not clear whose side they’re on. China seems to be supporting them, so you might want to find out more.
