My dear Friend and President, DJT,
I am writing to you from the Hearst Meeting Hall on the grounds of Asilomar. Math teachers are wondering around talking about grading papers and finding juicy problems. I wish you could have heard the 5 minute "Ignite" speeches last night. One was about "Voodoo Measurement" focused on the harm caused by standardized tests, and anther was about how fields such as cosmology have more rigorous licensing requirements than teaching. Good stuff!
Did you learn something new at the G20? How was your steak dinner with the Chinese contingent? It's great that you agreed to hold off on increasing tariffs for the time being, and I hope that China will buy more soybeans. I was surprised to learn that a lot of the fentanyl sold on the streets of the US comes from China and hope that their promise to treat it as a controlled substance has the desired effect. Did you suggest to Mr. Jinping that being President for life is a bad idea?
What are your thoughts on the 31 items in the G20 Leaders' declaration? Will you be dedicating your efforts to all of the things on the list? I would love to see us working on global world food security, addressing the root causes of displacement for refugees, developing an International Tax system, fighting corruption and restoring the health of the planet. The declaration included some info about Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR). I hadn't heard of that. Did you find out what that is and why it's a problem? Are you ready to make sure that public debt is on a sustainable path? I don't think taxing the goods that come from China is the best way to handle our debt. I suggest cutting back on defense spending as your first step in balancing the budget.
Thanks for spending some time with Angela M. grieving about the loss of GHW Bush. It was kind of her to acknowledge his important role in ending the Cold War and noting that his strength and reliability was at the core of the German-American friendship. What a nice lady!
