How was Kentucky? I saw the photo of you standing in front of that upended trailer home. I’m not convinced it’s a good idea to have people go “back to where they were.” Don’t you think it would be better for them to move out of a flood zone?
Isn’t it a relief that the anniversary of 8888 was relatively peaceful? According to Radio Free Asia, young folks held flash protests & recommitted themselves to uprooting the military. This takes courage, as any gathering leaves the participants vulnerable to attack by soldiers. It’s impressive that they can keep their plans secret & manage to organize 100s of people to assemble for a few minutes to express their solidarity. Please send them a tweet of admiration.
While I am excited that the CHIPS & Science Act you are signing today includes $$ for NSF & some STEM ed. activities, I worry about the environmental impacts of “clean energy.” Are we trading decarbonization for clean rivers?
Did you know that we don’t have Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) audits on the rare earths used for fabricating electronics? Companies like VW don’t know where their metals are coming from & they’d prefer to turn a blind eye on the devastation caused by the mining practices in places like Northern Burma where unlicensed miners are raping the land. The junta profits from this activity.
Please do what you can to put ESG audits in place to ensure that the inputs of the semiconductors are safe for people & the planet. This will make them much more expensive, but it may be time for us to slow down, cut back on our consumption & live simply. I encourage you to declare a “climate emergency” so Americans will start changing their habits.
