My Friend & POTUS, JRB,
It seems that your speech last night was a big success. I was sorry to miss it, but I had class. It was cool to see the photos of two women on the dais with you & encouraging to read in the WP that you “eschewed bombast” & said lots of encouraging things about “restor(ing) the soul of America” & “turning peril into possibility”. I hope we can prove that democracy works so that folks like the generals in Myanmar will stop trying to boss everyone around.
Speaking of which, I was disappointed that you didn’t mention Burma in your speech, nor did you give us an indication of whether you will follow through on your campaign promise to admit 125,000 refugees this year. I understand that 34 Senators want you to. In addition to all of the folks fleeing from Central America, Chin families from Eastern Myanmar are trying to cross the river into Thailand as the junta has started bombing the area. I hope you heard that the Chinland Defense Force claims to have killed 30 regime soldiers by ambushing them. This is worrisome.
Please give my regards to Jimmy Carter on your visit to GA today. I love the way that he lets his God shine through, even at age 96. I cast my first vote for him in 1980 & was pleased to see that one of his Presidential accomplishments was returning the Panama Canal Zone back to Panama. My great-grandfather worked as an engineer managing the canal back in the 1920s so it has a special place in my heart. I hope to go there someday. Have you been?
BYBS,
