Drip, drop it’s raining! We can’t go out to play, but we can cuddle in our chairs & watch the rain drops, everywhere. Drip, drop it’s raining. I learned that poem out of Highlights magazine & taught it to my daughter. My intention was we would memorize several poems together, but in the end that was the only complete poem we both learned. I often recite it when it’s drizzling, as it is right now. According to the internet, DC is beautiful today. I hope you take Commander outside for a walk & let the sun lift your spirits.
Perhaps your spirits are already high after reading UMWA’s Pres, Cecil Roberts (CR)’s latest pronouncement for JM3 to “revisit his opposition to this legislation & work with his colleagues to pass something that will help keep coal miners working, and have a meaningful impact on our members, their families, and their communities.”
Did you know that CR is the great-grandson of Ma Blizzard? She was one of the women who marched with coal miners & hit policemen with their umbrellas. She was friends with the more famous, Mother Jones, who was known for her fiery speeches where she spoke in the most passionate and profane terms against the exploitation of workers and their children. She appreciated the importance of the “oxygen of publicity” saying, “it takes extraordinary means to attract ordinary interest.”
Mining is dangerous business, here & around the world. Just yesterday, there was a mudslide at the jade mine in the Hpakant area of northern Kachin state in Burma. Up to 100 people are missing. Let’s add jade to our list of gems that we ask people to stop buying to prevent the junta from profiting from raping the environment & exploiting workers.
I hope the info about Ma Blizzard & Mother Jones inspire you to get more publicity & shine a light on CCC. As Mary Annaïse Heglar says, “climate math won’t reset just because the political math did.” Please keep paving the way for JM3 to get on board with your agenda.
