The plot thickens! When we thought things could not get any crazier, now we've got a split Congress. Should I fasten my seat belt or just enjoy the turbulence?
Actually, I am excited about the new face of the House. We've got Muslim women, Native American women, Black women from states like CT & MA, Latinas from Texas. We have Alexandria Ocasio-Cortes, youngest Representative ever! At least 22% of the folks in Congress will be XX. Maybe in 2020, when we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment, we'll be up to 30%.
Isn't it great that the leaders of the House Committees will include several brown faces. Maxine Waters will be checking into your Deutsche Bank loans. Elijah Cummings will provide some "aggressive oversight" into your business activities. Bennie Thompson will be investigating election security and Bobby Scott will not let Betsy DeVos get away with anything. Are you ready?
I'm sorry that Heidi Heitkamp lost in ND for sticking up for sexual assault survivors. I think deep in your heart you are sorry, too. Weren't you buddies back in Dec 2016? She's a brave soul and I hope you'll reach out to her to renew your friendship.
Speaking of ND, according to the Bismark Tribune, the Native Americans from the Standing Rock tribe had a hard time voting because they get their mail in PO Boxes and the new voter ID law does not allow that kind of address. Terry Yellow Fat was given 5 different addresses for the same location by 3 different jurisdictions and had to go to court to get it straightened out. I hope you can work with Jeff Sessions to fix that situation. If anyone deserves the right to vote, it's the folks who were here first.
I understand that you are excited that folks are calling you "magic man." Don't let that go to your head. You are a human, just like the rest of us. We each have some magic and we each have our demons. The Constitution tells us we are all equal. I hope that you can share that thought today.
